What do you love about your home?
Absolutely everything! We say to each other a couple of times a week how much we love our house. There have been so many priceless memories here and this home holds a variety of great moments in the lives of many of our friends. Specifically, this house is “come in, make yourself at home, and put your feet up”. The flooring (tumbled travertine), the granite counters (honed), and the island bar top (cracked glass) don’t show fingerprints at all. Best of all, there are no rooms that collect dust. We use the entire house. After hours, we’ve had incredible discussions outside by the wood burning fireplace. It’s the favorite location in the house.
We have hosted 22 fanatical college-aged friends from the University of Wisconsin! U of W was in the Rose Bowl four years in a row! Welcoming mid-westerners in the dead of winter and basically throwing a frat party for 5 days counts as one of our highlights. The weather cooperated and we heated the pool to 80 degrees. Even the boys said that their trip to our home was one of their personal favorites! We hosted Torrey Pines’ JV football team for their end-of-the-year award ceremony. We moved the furniture out of the great room and had the boys sit on the floor. The parents had seating, of course! For 3 or 4 glorious times, we hosted a untraditional “music recital” with performers and their parents. Live music in our house is the best! (We don’t have a formal dining room–we have a music room.) My husband plays the guitar and sings. Our daughter sings, too. In fact, her college essay focused on the simple days when she and her dad would sing duets before dinner.
What do you like about the Rancho Pacifica neighborhood?
There are some wonderful residents here. Before we built our house, I was the “self-appointed mayor” of Rancho Pacifica. I invited all of the house and lot owners to mingle and meet each other. We had 93 people attend. Most of the houses were not even built yet! The gate staff knows all of us by first and last name and they’ve been helpful, too. We appreciate their consistency and sweet personalities. The location has proven to be extremely convenient for our family. Whether shuttling the kids to school or sports, grabbing breakfast at Thyme in the Ranch, shopping at Whole Foods, catching a movie at Cineopolis, or buzzing down to the beach in Del Mar, we are a quick drive away from everything.
What are your favorite local activities, events, restaurants, or attractions?
Hands down, Market. The restaurant. We go there a couple of times a month. Another great spot right outside the gates is the award winning Rancho Valencia resort. There are several country clubs nearby (Fairbanks, Morgan Run, Rancho Santa Fe, Lomas Santa Fe, & The Farms) that have served as great places to connect with our friends. The farmers market is fun on the weekends and the best local produce in San Diego is just down the street at Chino Farms.
Since acquiring your home, what custom features have you added?
We built this house and are the original owners. Mostly, I’ve repurposed areas–ask my kids! Our casita was first my husband’s office, then we had a pool table and dart board set up for the teen years. Now, it’s a separate guest room that has quite a few regulars. No one wants us to sell! We did redo our pantry two years ago. It might be the best bar/pantry you’ve ever seen. It has a library ladder and tiled ceilings. We also added a bocce ball court along the east side of our yard which has provided a great deal of fun for our friends and family.
